What Is a Chiropractic Adjustment?

Manipulations are quick, controlled thrusts given manually or with the aid of a chiropractic tool. These adjustments target a specific joint or vertebrae in the spine and are generally high velocity (fast) and low amplitude (shallow or not very deep), using a small amount of energy.

The pressure from the thrust helps to improve the overall joint function by improving movement, calming nerves and muscles which may be imbalanced, and reducing pain.

Do chiropractic adjustments hurt, and what are the benefits?

Receiving a chiropractic adjustment is not usually painful. In fact, some patients find them relaxing because they know the relief they’re about to experience. The manipulation is incredibly quick, and although a popping sound often occurs due to gas forming in the joint, the motion is low-impact and gentle.

Some patients may feel slightly sore afterward which the doctor will address; however, the pain the imbalance was causing is generally significantly reduced or completely gone.  Any soreness on the following day is usually muscle soreness, the same as going to the gym, and should naturally go away within 1-3 days. This is significantly less likely the more adjustments a patient has.

Chiropractic manipulations can provide numerous benefits, including:

  • Improving spinal and joint motion

  • Fast relief

  • Improving overall body function

  • Enhancing movement and flexibility

  • Reducing pain and discomfort

  • Enhancing posture

  • Increasing range of motion

  • Restoring balance and symmetry

  • Natural, non-invasive recovery without medication or surgery

  • Little to no downtime

The purpose of manipulative therapy is to promote the optimal function of a joint by restoring joint movement, stimulating the nervous system to calm the surrounding muscles, and lessening the pain-signaling pathway.

Focusing on alleviating symptoms at the source, the aches and pains caused by injuries to the musculoskeletal system can be stopped in their tracks.
